Creating a New-to-the-World Product

THE CHALLENGE

Four entrepreneurial dads observed their kids eating seaweed sheets and saw an opportunity to make seaweed more snackable. However, these sheets typically lend themselves to a texture that was not widely appealing to consumers.

OUR WORK

We formulated a snack that made seaweed more broadly appealing by turning it into a crispy chip. Our seasoning strategy focused on accessible, yet trend-forward flavors. We screened seaweed sources, identified a co-packer, managed scale-up, and supervised the first commercial production.

THE RESULT

Ocean’s Halo launched their Seaweed Chip in September 2013 at Natural Products Expo East, where it was awarded the Best of Press Award. It is now sold in grocery stores nationwide including Whole Foods Market, Vons, Safeway, and Fresh & Easy.
