About the Position

This is first and foremost a sales position.

Our business is high touch. It is relationship-based. You must be comfortable with one-on-one selling, establishing long-term client relationships, and delivering world-class client and project management.

As the Mattson VP, Innovation, Food Away From Home, you will be responsible for helping us carve out a unique niche in the FAFH market, then going out and identifying and developing new Mattson foodservice clients, writing the proposals for engagement, and managing the innovation projects you bring in.

This position requires an understanding of the innovation needs of both foodservice manufacturers (i.e. General Mills Foodservice) as well as restaurant operators (i.e. Arby’s), as both segments represent potential business for Mattson.

You will be supported, but you will have the utmost freedom to chart your own path to success. You will work independently. Since we don’t have a formal training program for this position, being able to take the initiative is critically important to your success at Mattson. If you work best in a structured environment with policies and procedures, this may not be the best fit for you.

You must have the flexibility, personality and collaboration skills necessary to work cross-functionally with our team members in strategy, insights, creative, food technology, culinary, branding and design, and client management. You must be able to engage in strategic conversations with clients that range from the most inexperienced of start-up founders to the seasoned operators, marketers, chefs, researchers, and R&D members within the largest of our multinational clients.

You will have a jump-start on success if you come to Mattson with a network of contacts in the foodservice industry through years of work in it, and attendance at industry events.

You will need to be able to think creatively to solve innovation challenges. This includes recommending the appropriate innovation methodology, identifying new business, product, and menu opportunities for our clients, and working with our development teams to cleverly design food and drink that resonates with guests and generates profits for our clients.

You should have the ability to give an engaging and energetic client presentation, as well as develop and write it yourself.

As part of your job, you’ll be tasting food across the spectrum from ice cream to plant-based proteins, so you must be willing to taste (not necessarily eat) everything. Dietary restrictions are not compatible with this job.

Minimum Experience

  • Proven sales / business development experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • An undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • 5+ years in the foodservice/restaurant industry.
  • Demonstrated creativity in solving problems or business challenges.

  • Food manufacturing or food science knowledge or degree.
  • Restaurant or grocery operations experience.
  • A talent for a creative • A graduate degree in a related field.
  • 10+ years in the foodservice/restaurant industry.
  • Experience working on consumer packaged food innovation.
  • A culinary degree.
  • Experience planning, building out, and opening a new restaurant
