EXPANDING INTO NEW CATEGORIES
Electrical engineer Rob Rhinehart “resented the time, money, effort, purchase process, preparation, consumption time, and clean-up,” that shopping, cooking and eating food was taking up in his life. He set out to create a meal replacement that would nourish him with everything his body needed. The first version was Soylent 1.0, a dry powder blend. However, even this new-age way of getting nutrients lacked convenience. That’s when he called Mattson.
We formulated a ready-to-drink version of the original meal replacement powder, which the team dubbed Soylent 2.0. Our work included ingredient procurement, process development, flavor optimization, and a co-packer search. We also attended co-packer trials to validate our formula.
Soylent 2.0 launched in mid-2015 to great media attention. It immediately took off and we were tapped to begin development of the next round of 2.0 varieties. In mid-2016, we began work on Soylent 3.0.
